Friday Drawing 10/02/17

In Friday Drawing this week, the aim was to make tools out of random collected objects and use these to create gestural drawings inspired by movement. My tools included a kitchen roll tube cut at one end with wire wrapped around it, a loo roll tube covered in cotton wool, a paintbrush with a torn up sponge on one end and a water bottle covered in bubble wrap. After constructing our tools we were given the instructions, 'throw', 'heavy, 'walk', 'space', 'circles' and 'rhythm'. We had to decide which tool would be most appropriate to reflect each instruction and how we would use our bodies to achieve the desired effect. Although it was quite an open task which allowed total individual interpretation, I found I really had to think hard about the tools I would need to use to embody each instruction.

'Throw'

'Heavy'

'Walk'

'Space' and 'Circles'

'Rhythm'

This task encouraged me to think out of the box, and remember to use my whole body when drawing, not just my hands. It's easy to sit hunched over a desk, drawing for hours, but I found being stood up and challenging my idea of a traditional drawing tool made me make drawings which are unlike my usual style, but really expressive, with lots of energy.
