Viewpoint Magazine - Opendesk article

In this issue of Viewpoint magazine I came across this article, which talks about a London-based company called Opendesk. Their aim is to establish a company whose main focuses are on sustainability, social impact and supporting small businesses. They connect designers and makers the world over to clients looking for quality, eco-friendly work space furniture with an affordable price tag, and by establishing a network this way, they are able to offer clients almost anything they could wish for. The client is involved in the creation from the outset, so that they have an in-depth knowledge the of pricing, origin and eco-credentials of what they're buying. In a pioneering innovation, they have a collection of furniture on their website which you can buy for digital fabrication; meaning that the client can download the digital file, and the product can be made locally, anywhere in the world.  As someone particularly interested in sustainable design for the future, I found this article both ingenious and uplifting. Creating a web of contacts in the design world means that small businesses can get the promotion they need and market them to customers who will really appreciate what they have to offer. I think this is a fantastic idea and is definitely an example of the changing attitude towards mass produced, low-quality design.
